The market adjusts for the most visible compression (back-to-backs) but often under-adjusts for the cumulative effect of the broader stretch. A team might not be on the second night of a back-to-back, but if tonight is their fourth game in five nights, the fatigue is comparable. The spread might reflect a 1-point schedule adjustment, but the data suggests 2-3 points is fairer for the tail end of a compressed stretch.

Rest Advantages and the Sweet Spot

The inverse of schedule compression is rest advantage – teams that have had multiple days off before a game. The sweet spot, based on my data, is two days of rest. Teams with exactly two days off outperform their spread by roughly 0.8 points against teams with one day off or less. Three or more days of rest actually reduces the advantage slightly, because teams can lose rhythm and sharpness after extended breaks. The rust factor is real, particularly for teams that rely on timing-dependent offensive systems.

The All-Star break creates the most pronounced version of this dynamic. Teams returning from the break have had 5-9 days off, and the first game back is notoriously volatile. Putting It Together on a Typical Tuesday

I open the NBA schedule for the week, identify every game where a situational factor is present (lookahead, letdown, compression, rest advantage), and assign a directional lean based on the spot. Then I compare my lean to the market’s spread. If the spot suggests the underdog should cover and the spread has not adjusted for the situational factor, I have a candidate.

The discipline is not betting every spot. Some spots are already priced in – the market is better at this than it was five years ago.
